رغم ما كان من مبادرات المسلمين إلى إعلان مبدأ الإخاء الديني مع أهل الإيمان كلهم بدءاً من المرحلة المكية، حتى وفاة الرسول صلى الله عليه وسلم، ثم في الأزمنة التالية التي حقق فيها المسلمون مبدأ التعايش مع أتباع الأديان المخالفة في واقعية لم تسبق في التاريخ، إلاّ أن عداء المسيحية للإسلام، وصراعها معه ظلّ قائما طيلة قرون عديدة وهو مايجعل الوقوف على منطلقاته وأسسه اللاهوتية والفكرية ودوافعه النفسية ، ضرورة متجدّدة. وإ هذا الأمر يقود بالضرورة إلى الحديث عن تاريخ المسيحية وسياقات ظهورها ، وعلاقتها باليهودية من حيث طبيعة الرؤية العامة للعالم والانسان 
والتاريخ. أي محاولة تفسيرية تحمل في طياتها معان متداخلة من حيث مدلولاتها، كالفهم والشرح والتعبير والكشف عن الغموض وإعلان المحتوى بعد تحليله وحتى الترجمة.لم يخرج آباء الكنيسة الأوائل عن هذه المفاهيم في ممارساتهم التفسيرية بنيّة استقاء العقائد واستيعاب قصد الإله من خلال كلماته، وقد اهتمت مدرسة أنطاكية اللاهوتية بتفسير الكتاب المقدس على غرار مدرسة الإسكندرية الرمزية لكنها اتخذت لنفسها منهجا مغايرا لنظيرتها في الإسكندرية، وبدايات التيار التفسيري الحرفي كانت مع لوقيانوس الأنطاكي الذي يُعتقد أن الفضل يعود له من حيث تأسيسها، وبلغت أعلى مستويات عطائها العلمي أيام ديودورس الطرسوسي، والميزة اللافتة لهذه المدرسة تظهر جليا في شدة تمسكها بمنهجها الحرفي حتى صار تقليدا متوارثا بالرغم من أن نتائجه آلت إلى مخالفات عقدية جسيمة في جوهر الإيمان المسيحي، وفي هذا الإطار تتزايد الرغبة للكشف عن تاريخ هذه المدرسة والظروف التي نشأت فيها ودوافعها، والبحث في أصولها الفكرية التي شكّلت منهجها وتحليل طريقة تطبيقه على النصوص، وكذا التداعيات التي ترتبت على ذلك، لاسيما وأن المنهج الحرفي قد ساهم بشكل جريء في أحداث ما يسمى بعصر الجدالات المسيحية، فالكنيسة الجامعة لم تعرف الاستقرار في القرون الأولى لأن النزعة الحرفية فرضت نفسها على الساحة اللاهوتية بقوة، وتقريبا لم يكن للكنيسة شغل آخر غير الاهتمام بالرد على الهرطقات والبدع التي أثارها الحرفيون حول عقيدة التثليث وطبيعة المسيح وغيرها من خلال المجامع المسكونية، واللاهوت الدفاعي.
